Tourists' Self-Spectacularization: A Deep Dive

In the digital era, travel photography has transcended its traditional role as a form of memory preservation to become a powerful tool of self-representation and social communication. With the proliferation of platforms such as Weibo and Instagram, tourists increasingly use images to express identity, emotions, and social connections. This research explores how visual data, particularly tourists’ body postures, function as a form of symbolic interaction and identity construction within digital culture. By integrating computer vision and behavioral analysis, the study offers a deeper understanding of how tourists negotiate meaning and presence through online visual practices.

Theoretical Framework: Symbolic Interactionism in Tourism Studies

Symbolic interactionism provides a valuable lens for examining how tourists use body language and posture in photographs to convey meaning. Tourists’ visual self-representations are not isolated acts but rather social performances shaped by cultural expectations and digital interaction. Through symbolic cues, such as gestures, stances, and facial expressions, tourists position themselves in relation to others and their travel environments. This theoretical perspective enables the interpretation of body schema patterns as social symbols, reflecting broader dynamics of identity, communication, and belonging in tourism contexts.

Methodological Innovation: Integrating Computer Vision and Behavioral Analysis

The study introduces a novel methodological framework by combining advanced machine learning techniques with sociological inquiry. Using Residual Neural Networks and MediaPipe for pose recognition and feature extraction, it systematically analyzes tourists’ body schema across large-scale datasets. This integration bridges the gap between computational methods and behavioral research, enabling a more precise understanding of nonverbal cues in tourism photography. Such an approach highlights the growing relevance of artificial intelligence in the humanities and social sciences.

Dataset and Analytical Approach: Weibo and Instagram Case Study

A dataset of 555,970 tourist photographs collected from Weibo and Instagram forms the empirical basis of this study. These platforms represent distinct yet interconnected digital cultures, providing insights into cross-cultural expressions of travel behavior. Latent Class Analysis was employed to identify recurring body expression patterns, revealing underlying behavioral typologies among tourists. By analyzing such a vast corpus of user-generated content, the study demonstrates how large-scale digital traces can be harnessed to understand cultural patterns in tourism practices.

Body Schema Typologies: Emotional, Communicative, and Experiential

The findings of the study reveal three primary body schema types among tourists: emotional, communicative, and experiential. The emotional schema reflects gestures and postures that express feelings such as joy, wonder, or excitement. The communicative schema emphasizes social interaction, often involving gestures directed at companions or the camera audience. The experiential schema highlights immersive bodily engagement with the environment, suggesting exploration and sensory experience. These typologies illustrate how body posture acts as a medium for self-expression, social bonding, and meaning-making in tourism.

Implications for Tourism Behavior and Identity Construction

By situating visual body expressions within socio-cultural contexts, this research sheds light on how tourists construct and negotiate identities through digital images. Body postures not only communicate emotions but also reinforce cultural norms, social roles, and symbolic belonging in travel communities. The methodological approach demonstrates how machine learning can enrich tourism studies by uncovering subtle behavioral patterns that traditional methods may overlook. Ultimately, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of how digital media transforms tourism from a private experience into a socially embedded practice of identity and meaning.
